  • Try Out the Gratitude Attitude

Welcome back to a short work week. Having just celebrated Thanksgiving, most of us got together with family and friends for a feast of turkey and all the fixings. Now the leftovers!

As you get rolling this week and pack the five days into four, take a moment to consider the beauty of having a holiday that is based on gratitude. Did you take any time to give thanks for the things you enjoy in your life over the holiday weekend? Sometimes we get so caught up in the travel plans, guest invitations, food preparation, eating and clean up that we do not consider our good fortune.

Could we have asked for a more perfect weekend to celebrate this holiday? A warm, sunny weekend in October is a wonderful blessing. Did you enjoy the pleasure of a meal with some people you do not often get to spend time with? Is sitting down to a meal an unusual treat for you? How many incredible things, just from last weekend, could you be thankful for?

Right now is the perfect time to do a little weekend debrief and put together a gratitude list. Think about all the things you enjoyed over the weekend. Replay the images of moments that were particularly joyful. Make sure the memory of what you loved about the weekend stays clear in you mind for a long time to come. Say thank you to your life for providing you with the joy you get to experience.

If you are having a little trouble finding a moment that was even a bit fun about the weekend, consider this; it is normal for most people to remember all the things that they did not like or that did not go as planned. Family holidays are often charged with emotional memories that influence our experiences at these times. Just make sure your take some time and create a clear image in your head of one thing you liked. Maybe it was a moment where someone said something or did something. Perhaps it was the beautiful spread you prepared. Maybe it was a little time you got to yourself. Just make sure that you can create a visual of something to be thankful for.

The thing with gratitude is that when you focus attention on it, it expands. Actually, whatever occupies your thoughts most of the time becomes the reality in your life. Making sure the things you love, enjoy or want to see in your life occupy your thoughts most of or all of the time is a sure way to experience more of that in your life.

Thanksgiving happens once a year but you can practice gratitude year round. Being aware of your thoughts allows you to notice what is in them. Since what is in your thoughts most of the time is creating your dominant experience of life, noticing this is a good thing! Create the consciousness of filling your thoughts with images to be thankful for. Why not? It’s your mind. You create the rules and the nice thoughts make you happy!
