Athletic woman stretches before a run

Incorporating a regular massage into your schedule can help athletes to reach optimal performance while reducing the risk of injury.  Therapeutic massage involves manipulation of the soft tissue structures of the body and soothes, calms and aids in stress reduction.  Sports massage is often based on Swedish massage and frequently includes cross-fibre massage as well as trigger point therapy.

Sports massage can be utilized in these 3 areas…

Pre-Event massage – Pre-event massage is used as a supplement to an athlete’s warm-up routine.  Massage will help to enhance circulation and reduce excess muscle and mental tension prior to competition.  It also improves tissue pliability, readying the athlete for top performance.

Post-Event massage – Post-event massage is geared toward reducing the muscle spasms and metabolic build-up that occur with vigorous exercise.  Many sports massage techniques enhance the body’s own recovery process and reduce the risk of future injury.

Maintenance massage – A massage therapist who has extensive knowledge of anatomy and kinesiology can help an athlete greatly with their overall health and performance.  The objective of a massage maintenance program is to help athletes reach optimal performance through injury-free training by maintaining healthy muscles.
