What’s happening in your life today? Take a moment to think about the day so far and how you feel about the events that are taking place. Are they good, bad, exceptional, boring, exciting or what?
What is it that you focus on? Your focus will dictate your perception of your days, weeks, months etc. So where is your focus? Is it on the same old boring thing each day? Does it move from one crisis to the next? Is it on all the things you have not done? Or maybe it’s on all your accomplishments. Or the gifts you bring to the world. Do you see how your focus can affect your experience of a day?
There are two places to observe your focus; the foreground and the background.
The foreground is the space that dominates your thoughts and holds most of your attention. In a single day, what is in your foreground? What is continually grabbing your attention all day? What is it in a day that gets your energy? What are the things that you choose to act on? Make yourself a list of the things that are in your foreground. It can be quite eye opening.
The background is that fuzzier area of your awareness where your attention is not immediately called. It is the place that provides a backdrop for the rest of your conscious thoughts. It can be brought to your attention when you look at it or focus on it but most of the time it goes unnoticed.
What is in your background? What are the things that you do not pay attention to that might make a difference in your day-to-day life? What occupies some of your mind and comes up from time to time but does not really get much of your attention? Are there things in the background that tweak your interest? Write a list of the things that are in your background.
When you look at the two lists, are there things you would like to move? Maybe some things in the foreground that take a lot of your attention and energy need to be moved to the background. Maybe some things in the background need to be moved to the foreground and given more attention and energy.
What would happen if your moved a few things? Could your experience day-to-day be different?
The difference between an ordinary life and an extraordinary life is what is in the foreground and background. Changing what you focus your energy on, changes your experience and perception. It’s your choice. You can focus on what you want or you can focus on whatever is grabbing your attention at the time. Choose wisely.
